The Philadelphia Flyers had a busy Thursday. A trade, a player placed on injured reserve, followed by a game, that at one point looked dead, turned into an offensive showcase from some of the team’s young stars.

It was a busy day for the Flyers.

Around the league, one of the top remaining pending UFAs got locked up. The NHL trade market could look much different than expected. Building off of that, could one Atlantic team be a destination for one top trade chip?

We delve into all of that and more on the 10/31 edition of the PhHN Daily.

Philadelphia Flyers

Philly Hockey Now: Let’s do this in chronological order.

In his morning availability before the game on Thursday, Rick Tocchet said that Sam Ersson was “dealing with a tweak” and that Aleksei Kolosov would be backing up Dan Vladar. It seemed like a minor issue at the time.

Following that, the Flyers made an AHL trade. Philadelphia and Dallas swapped prospects that seemingly had no room to move up. The Flyers acquired D Christian Kyrou in a one-for-one trade with F Samu Tuomaala, headed to Dallas. Both players will report to their new AHL teams.

Check out the details of the trade.

Soon after the trade was announced, the team made the official move to place Ersson on injured reserve, recalling Kolosov. While we knew Ersson would be unavailable on Thursday, a stint on IR was somewhat unexpected. The injury is clearly bigger than “a little tweak”.

Then, game time.

The Flyers were dominated in the first period. Nashville’s dominance continued throughout the first half of the game. Dan Vladar stood tall and kept his team right in the middle of the action. Rick Tocchet called him the “smelling salts” that “woke the team up”.

Well, the team did, in fact, wake up, leading the Flyers to a 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night.

NHL Rumors & News

Colorado Hockey Now: Martin Necas got PAID. The Avalanche and Necas agreed on an eight-year contract with $11.5 million annually, effectively taking him off the market. Another player is off the 2026 free agent market.

It’s funny, Necas is signing for $11.5 million annually. Mikko Rantanen eventually signed for $12 million a year, essentially indicating that the entire saga of trading Rantanen saved Colorado about $500k a year.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh Penguins, a once definite seller, are a surprising 7-2-2. They were expected to have some of the most coveted trade chips in the NHL in Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell. Their sudden success has put their trade destiny in question. Now, will the other teams’ slow starts reset the trade market? Dan Kingerski looks into the future of the NHL trade market.

Montreal Hockey Now: Nazem Kadri feels like the new “top name” on the trade market these days. The Montreal Canadiens are a team he has consistently been linked to. Montreal Hockey Now’s Marc Dumont explores the Kadri to Montreal rumors and evaluates the chatter.

Would prefer Rantanen @ 12 instead of Necas @ 11.5.
