We’re just 10 games into the NCAA season, and it has become clear that Porter Martone is the real deal. He is making an early case for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the best player in NCAA Hockey.

The Flyers’ prospect and Michigan State Spartans’ freshman is putting on a show in East Lansing. As a 19-year-old, Martone has 14 points (7 goals, 7 assists) in 10 games.

Currently, the Flyers’ prospect is tied for 27th in points amongst all NCAA hockey players, per College Hockey News. Martone’s seven goals put him in a deep tie for the 15th most in college hockey.

Comparing him to the rest of the freshmen, the Flyers’ prospect’s 14 points are good for fifth amongst all freshmen, just one point shy of the leaders, including Gavin McKenna (PSU) and fellow 2025 draftee Vaclav Nestrasil.

It’s clear that Martone is fitting in just fine in the NCAA. Now, with Big Ten play, Martone is really taking off.

Martone was kept clean off the score sheet in MSU’s Big Ten opener vs. Penn State, but since then, he has five points in three games, including four goals and a primary assist.

Before the Big Ten play opened, Martone had a four-point weekend against Northern Michigan, posting two goals, a primary assist, and a secondary assist.

In Michigan State’s series against Boston University, the Flyers’ 2025 6th-overall pick had two points, a goal, and a primary assist in the finale. The right winger had a secondary assist in the season opener against New Hampshire and another secondary assist. He also had a primary assist in the second game.

So, altogether, 11 of the 14 points Porter Martone has earned this season are primary points. For a freshman, that is pretty impressive.

Is 14 points in 10 games enough to make a case for the Hobey Baker Award? Probably not. But when you dig deeper, you see a player whose scoring touch is scorching hot. You also see a player who is leading the No. 1 team in the nation in points and goals. Martone is just one assist shy of tying the team lead in that stat as well.

Porter Martone is the best player on the best team in the country and is putting together an early case to be the 2026 Hobey Baker Award winner.

I was at the Saturday game at Notre Dame. Martone is a beast of a player. So glad he fell to us in the draft.
