Flyers Acquire Forward From Rival in Exchange for Disgruntled Defenseman
The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired forward Philip Tomasino in exchange for defenseman Egor Zamula in a one-for-one swap with the cross-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins.
Zamula recently cleared waivers before being assigned to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Since then, he has switched agents to Dan Milstein. He is the same agent who orchestrated Alex Texier’s contract termination in St. Louis. It became clear that Zamula wanted a new start.
Elliotte Freidman recently reported that the Flyers’ preference was to find a trade partner to acquire a player in exchange for Zamula. Specifically, one that could help them out in the AHL this season, and possibly in the NHL further down the road.
Well, they found that player in a deal with Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins, acquiring Philip Tomasino, a former first-round pick of the Nashville Predators in 2019.
About the Flyers’ new forward
Like Zamula, Tomasino had been sent to the AHL. So, he will report to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, per Flyers GM Danny Briere.
Tomasino, 24, is like a Swiss Army knife. The 6’0″ forward can play both center and the wing. Given the Flyers’ depth at the position, it would not shock me to see him play more of a center role.
Between Pittsburgh and Nashville, Tomasino has played 218 NHL games, tallying 34 goals and 95 points in his career. This season, he played 9 games in the NHL before being sent down, earning just an assist.
Tomasino is on a one-year, $1.75 million deal and will be an RFA in the offseason. His best season was his rookie year, when he had 11 goals and 32 points for Nashville in 2021-22. He was traded to Pittsburgh in search of a fresh start, but he never really found one.
From Pittsburgh Hockey Now’s Dan Kingerski:
“Tomasino is a perimeter winger who struggled to play in the gritty areas. He has a better-than-average wrist shot, but can too often take too long to let it go. He was given what the Penguins called a “long runway” to establish himself last season, but his offense came in clumps.”
Again, Tomasino will report to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL.

He is an all star AHL guy only that will help LV m. WB fans are not happy about this as we don’t need another D guy.
Dont like to see a 25 yr old established NHL roster defensemen traded away for a minor leaguer. In order to make the playoffs, depth at D is primary. A Met Div rival just improved.
