The Philadelphia Flyers have their third player officially named to an Olympic roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Who will be joining Travis Sanheim and Rodrigo Abols in Milan?

The Winter Classic is today… in Miami. That’ll be pretty cool, I think.

Around the league, the American Olympic roster has been released. Who made it, and who didn’t? We also have more NHL trade rumors, including a team that could be a perfect trade partner with the Flyers.

Get it all on the 1/2 edition of the PhHN Daily.

Philadelphia Flyers

Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers have another Olympian! Joining Travis Sanheim, Rodrigo Abols, and Rick Tocchet at the 2026 Winter Olympics will be Rasmus Ristolainen with Finland.

Who else is joining Ristolainen at the Olympics for Team Finland?

That is now three players, and four total Flyers that are Olympic Bound. With no Flyers on Team USA and no Swedish Flyers in the Olympics, all eyes shift to Dan Vladar and Czechia.

A short Philadelphia Flyers’ section today. Not much news came on New Year’s Day. Now, barring any more Friday news, the Flyers’ focus shifts to Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. EST showdown with the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.

NHL rumors & news

Sportsnet: Let’s start with a good laugh. Los Angeles Kings superfan and famous actor/comedian Will Ferrell was at it again at the Kings game vs. the Lightning. We’ve seen it all, from an exhausted Buddy the Elf to Anchorman. This time, Ferrell showed up as an NHL referee.

I got a good laugh out of this this morning, so I figured I’d pass it along.

The Athletic ($): What’s next for the New York Rangers? This season has not gone anything like they had hoped for, especially after hiring Mike Sullivan. With the team’s direction unclear, there could be some movement in New York.

The Athletic ($): Speaking of trade rumors, even after pulling off the Quinn Hughes blockbuster, it does not seem like Wild GM Bill Guerin is done making deals. Minnesota is in win-now mode, and they have the assets to get something done.

In all honesty, I really do like the Flyers and Wild as possible trade partners, beyond the previously reported interest in Bobby Brink.

The Swedish Olympic roster has been released. No Flyers were named to the team.

NHL.com: The 2026 United States Winter Olympic roster is out! No surprise, zero Flyers made the team. However, there are definitely some shocks regarding the final roster.

Forever Blueshirts: One of those shocks: Adam Fox was left off the roster. The New York Rangers defenseman reacts to being left off Team USA.

Florida Hockey Now: There is outdoor hockey in Miami, Florida, today. That’s right, the ice has not yet melted, and the Rangers and Panthers take the ice at Loan Depot Park, the home of the Miami Marlins. One thing we do know: Matthew Tkachuck has been ruled out.
