PHILADELPHIA – Powered by a two-goal night from Trevor Zegras, the Philadelphia Flyers (22-12-7) cruised to a 5-2 win vs. Zegras’ former team, the Anaheim Ducks (21-19-3), Tuesday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Trevor Zegras, Cam York, Travis Sanheim, and Nikita Grebenkin all scored for the Flyers. Cutter Gauthier and Alex Killorn scored for the Ducks.

Gauthier scored early in the game, in an attempt to quiet the hostile Flyers crowd, but could not do so. The Flyers poured on four-straight goals, backed by good goaltending and an energetic crowd.

For the Flyers, Tuesday’s win was their second in a row. With the loss, it is now the Ducks’ seventh-straight game without two points.

Here’s how we reached the final score.

Zegras vs. Gauthier in the first 20, advantage Zegras

Anaheim Ducks rising star Cutter Gauthier played in his second game in South Philadelphia on Tuesday, and the Flyers faithful let him know that they still have not forgotten. Gauthier was given the Sidney Crosby treatment – booed on every puck touch.

Well, if there is one way to quiet the crowd, it’s score a goal. That’s just what he did. With Philadelphia down a man as Noah Cates got a two-minute instigation penalty, the Ducks were on the power-play, giving Gauthier (20) the chance to silence the crowd. The former Flyers’ prospect buried the one-timer, assisted by Jackson LaCombe (19) and Troy Terry (28).

It worked to quiet the crowd, in theory, except it didn’t.

It was a former Flyers prospect who started the scoring, so it was fitting that a former Duck answered the call.

Trevor Zegras (16) scored a crazy angle one-timer off a sweet feed from Christian Dvorak (17). Travis Konecny (24) also earned a helper on the goal.

The Ducks got called for a bench minor, too many men on the ice, just over two minutes later. Zegras already scored once vs. his former team, but another was twice as nice.

From almost the exact same angle, Zegras (17) scored another one-timer after Cam York (15) drew the defense to the slot, freeing Zegras for the shot. Sean Couturier (19) had the secondary assist on the goal, giving the Flyers the 2-1 first-period lead.

The Flyers had one more power-play chance after Zegras drew a hooking call on Beckett Senecke, but could not get their second power-play goal of the period, taking the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Flyers pile on

Philly did not score on the power play to close the first period. However, it only took 1:15 into period No. 2 for the Flyers to extend their lead. Cam York (3) scored from the blueline, assisted by Nikita Grebenkin (7) and Noah Cates (13), putting his team up 3-1.

Not long after, a scary scene happened. Well behind the play, Ross Johnston clipped Jamie Drysdale with an elbow. The Flyers’ defenseman hit the ice hard and was down for quite some time. He eventually skated off the ice with some help. Johnston was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for the hit.

Philadelphia, already without Bobby Brink, who exited the game in the first period after a collision with Jansen Harkins, was now down a second skater, playing with 16.

The Flyers then have a five-minute power-play, where they could not really seem to get anything going.

So, play resumed at 5-on-5, with another missed power-play opportunity just under seven minutes later.

Philadelphia still extended its lead, as Travis Sanheim (5) sent a slap shot past Lukas Dostal off the draw, assisted by Cates (14), extending the lead to 4-1. That was the score headed into the second intermission.

Flyers close it out

Early in the third period, 1:25 seconds to be exact, the Ducks finally showed some life. Alex Killorn (4) scored Anaheim’s second power-play goal of the game, set up by Terry (29) and LaCombe (20), the same pair that set up the Gauthier goal early in the first.

It was a 4-2 game, but Zegras nearly answered yet again, but Konecny could not get it on Zegras’ stick on the rush, so the two-goal lead remained.

Just under eight minutes into the third period, Radko Gudas took on Granet Hathawat after the Flyers’ forward crushed Ducks defenseman Ian Moore.

It did not take long for the Flyers to get another power-play opportunity after Jacob Trouba got called for an elbow on Denver Barkey. 1:15 into the man-advantage, the Flyers could not score, but Trouba’s former Rangers teammate Chris Kreider joined him in the box after a high stick, giving Philadelphia the 5-on-3 advantage for 45 seconds.

Despite the advantage, Philadelphia was unable to put the game away on either power play.

The Ducks gave the Flyers their eighth power play of the game after Gudas was called for an elbow, but once again, no dice.

However, that would not matter. The Ducks pulled Dostal, and Nikita Grebenkin (3) nailed the empty-netter, bringing the game to its 5-2 final.
