Philadelphia Flyers prospect Jack Berglund brought home the gold medal at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship.

Berglund captained the Swedish team that went undefeated throughout the tournament. They defeated Czechia 4-2 on Monday, closing out their Gold Medal run. It was the third time Sweden won the tournament, and the first time since 2012. The other championship came in 1981.

2026 was Berglund’s first World Juniors, as an injury kept him out of the 2025 competition. He was expected to have a big role as a penalty-killer, a power-play center, and boy, did he make a good impression.

Berglund was tied with top 2026 draft prospect Ivar Stenberg as Sweden’s leading scorer in the tournament with 3 goals and 10 total points. The Swedish captain tallied two primary assists in the final, including a powerful shorthanded assist. Just watch 26 in yellow.

Those were the type of plays that Berglund was making all tournament. He came just as advertised and has shown just why the Flyers are excited about him.

We saw his strength on the puck, his playmaking, and his two-way ability on display all tournament. One thing that did not go unnoticed either: his leadership.

It was an unbelievable championship run. Congratulations to Jack Berglund and Sweden.

Two Flyers prospects raise their stock at World Juniors

Berglund was not the only Flyers prospect to raise his stock over the tournament. Philly had two prospects representing Finland, and both did not disappoint.

Heikkie Ruohonen and Max Westergard put on a show for their country and undoubtedly raised their standing within the Flyers’ prospect pool.

First, Westergard, a 5th round pick in 2025, did not have high expectations for the tournament. Yet, when he was on the ice, it was hard to notice him. He was energetic, skillful, and quite fun to watch. He finished the tournament with a goal and 4 points in 7 games. Assuming he gets the nod again in 2027, he will be a name to watch.

The other: Heikki Ruohonen. Ruohonen was one of three Flyers prospects to wear a letter at the tournament, earning the A. The Flyers’ prospect and current Harvard center had a great tournament.

Ruohonen led a Finnish team that finished 4th in the standings with 3 goals and 9 total points. He was 10th overall in the tournament in scoring. Ruohonen may have been overlooked as a prospect before the tournament, but the 2024 4th round pick put himself on the map.

Porter Martone bounced back after a slow start; Luchanko Quiet during play

Wearing the C for Canada, Porter Martone got off to a bit of a slow start. Martone scored the empty-net dagger in the Boxing Day matchup vs. Czechia. But, he did not get his first point with a goaltender in net until the third game, Canada’s domination over Denmark.

Martone was expected to be a dominant force all tournament, but it took him a bit to get there. However, once he did, Martone met expectations and then some. The Canadian captain finished the tournament in 7th place in total scoring with 9 points and 6 goals, the most in the tournament.

Canada finished 3rd in the tournament, not the finish that Martone and the team wanted. However, the Flyers still have to be happy with the way their 2025 6th overall pick performed. He will now return to Michigan State and continue his Hobey Baker-worthy season.

On the other side, it was a relatively quiet tournament for Jett Luchanko. The Flyers’ 2024 13th overall selection did not stand out in the entire tournament. He got his first and only point in the Canadian’s semi-finals loss to Czechia, a secondary assist on the opening goal.

While a bigger role was anticipated for the Flyers’ center prospect, he was moved to the wing before tournament play began, and eventually buried on the 4th line, playing his off wing. Luchanko, however, kept his penalty kill and power-play roles. All eyes will shift to Brantford to see if Luchanko can bounce back and finish his OHL career strong.

Not much action for Vansaghi

As far as the tournament went for Shane Vansaghi, well, there was not much to talk about. The Flyers’ 2025 2nd round pick suited up for just three games during the tournament, playing the minimal extra skater role in each. He did not register a point and had a -4 rating.

The junior game has been much more skillful and finesse recently. Vansaghi plays more of a hard-nose, high-octane energy type role.

Obviously, Vansaghi would not have made the American team if he weren’t good enough, but I see his game as much more suited for the NHL than juniors. I am more interested in seeing how he finishes the season with Michigan State than his play at World Juniors.

So, at the end of the tournament, here is how the Flyers’ prospects finished.

Jack Berglund, F, SWE (C) – 7 GP, 3 G, 7 A, 10 TP, GOLD (6th OVR)
Porter Martone, F, CAN (C) – 7 GP, 6 G, 3 A, 9 TP, BRONZE (7th OVR)
Heikki Ruohonen, F, FIN (A) – 7 GP, 3 G, 6 A, 9 TP (10th OVR)
Max Westergard, F, FIN – 7 GP, 1 G, 3 A, 4 TP
Jett Luchanko, F, CAN – 7 GP, 1 A, 1 TP
Shane Vansaghi, F, USA – 3 GP, 0 TP
