PHILADELPHIA – Scott Laughton’s late-game equalizer in his return to Xfinity Mobile Arena forced overtime against his former team, as the Toronto Maple Leafs (21-15-7) rallied late to beat the Philadelphia Flyers (22-12-8) 2-1 on Thursday night.

Travis Konecny scored early in the second period for the Flyers, and Laughton’s late-game equalizer forced overtime, before Easton Cowan buried the dagger.

Here is how we got to the final score.

A low-event battle

It was not the busiest of first periods for Thursday’s game. That theme remained consistent all throughout the game. There were a combined 14 shots and just one power play chance.

Both teams looked a bit disconnected in the first period. Neither team generated much sustained pressure. There was a lot of back-and-forth during the opening 20 minutes.

The Flyers specifically had a couple of great chances, including a Denver Barkey breakaway, Christian Dvorak in close, and a couple of really good fourth-line shifts. However, nothing would go, and the first period ended still scoreless.

That one power play from the first belonged to the Flyers after a Troy Stecher slash, and it bled into the second period. Philadelphia could not convert on the man-advantage, but it did not take long after for the Flyers to get on the board.

After the power play expired, Dvorak (18) found Travis Konecny (14) from behind the net, and Konecny put his team up 1-0. Rasmus Ristolainen (3) earned the secondary assist on the goal.

You’d think that would have turned the tide a bit, but that was wrong. Once again, the closest the Flyers came was on yet another great shift by the fourth line, really driven by Nikita Grebenkin.

Toronto would not really have a chance until late in the second, but Morgan Rielly could not control the puck and get a shot on the wide-open net after a slick Matias Maccelli feed. So, the game entered the final 20 minutes with a 1-0 Flyers lead.

The Flyers opened the third period without alternate captain Travis Konecny and were forced to close out the game without their lone goal-scorer.

Dan Vladar was just under six minutes away from his first shutout in a Flyers’ uniform. However, Scott Laughton (5) scored the unassisted equalizer with 5:56 to go, ending Vladar’s pursuit of a clean sheet.

It was enough to force overtime at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Flyers lose it in overtime

Trevor Zegras had a breakaway chance in the first minute of overtime, but could not get the puck past Dennis Hildeby.

Toronto turned around with a breakaway of its own by Easton Cowan.

The Flyers responded with two prime chances, one by Matvei Michkov and the other by Sean Couturier. Both players had a wide-open net, but could not get the shot off.

Then, John Tavares (24) led the rush and eventually fed Cowan (6) for the game-winner, beating the Flyers 2-1 on Thursday.
