The Philadelphia Flyers are still in the chase to make the Stanley Cup playoffs, but they are hanging on by a thread.

In fact, that might even be an understatement.

Before Saturday night’s game against New Jersey, the Flyers playoff odds are currently 15.1%, per Moneypuck. Their latest victory against New York gave the Flyers a big boost, but they still have a lot of work to complete in their final two games of the season.

Right now, the team to beat is Pittsburgh. They’ve crept into control over the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference, and Moneypuck gives them a 57.1% chance of making it. Because the Pens are one point ahead of the Flyers and own the tiebreaker, the Flyers can be eliminated on Saturday if they lose in regulation and Pittsburgh gets one point against Boston.

The stakes are simple: desperation has to set in because Saturday’s game is an absolute must-win for the Flyers. John Tortorella and his crew have known what’s at risk for some time, and while Thursday night’s win over New York was progress, there also needs to be consistency for these final two games.

Though Sam Ersson is likely to be the starter for the Flyers on Saturday against New Jersey, the team’s odds of winning this individual game do not change based on the starting goalie. At the time of this writing, Moneypuck gives the Flyers a 53.1% chance of beating New Jersey.

It’s also worth noting that, though New Jersey is 2-0-1 against the Flyers this season, two of those three games have gone to overtime. That means the Flyers have a good chance of avoiding being mathematically eliminated on Saturday, but they really need to win at all costs.

If they fail to do that, it means a Stanley Cup playoff berth is all but out of reach.
