Flyers Make Adjustments, Earn 10th Comeback Win Wednesday vs. Panthers

The Philadelphia Flyers earned their 10th come-from-behind victory of the season, beating the Florida Panthers 4-2 on Wednesday night.

It was a big night from Emil Andrae, who powered the comeback with a goal and a primary assist on a Matvei Michkov goal. Tyson Foerster gave the Flyers the late lead, and Sean Couturier put the win on ice for the Flyers.

Dan Vladar shone once again, turning in yet another big-time performance in goal.

With the win, Philadelphia’s record improved to 12-7-3 for the season. They won the season series vs. the Panthers 2-1-0.

It was not the prettiest win for the Flyers. They were forced to make adjustments after the first period. Once those adjustments were made, they were a completely different team.

Here is how we got to the final score.

Panthers Start Hot

The game started off with the Flyers looking ready to strike after being shut out the game prior. They were playing with lots of energy and possessed the puck early. However, the momentum would shift in the blink of an eye, and all of a sudden, it was the Panthers’ period.

After a Nick Seeler pass was intercepted by AJ Greer, the Panthers were on the rush. Carter Verhaeghe found Sam Bennett, who drew the focus of the Flyers’ defense, including Dan Vladar, leaving Brad Marchand alone on the doorstep for an easy goal.

The momentum had quickly shifted in Florida’s favor, and the Panthers had the 1-0 lead.

That was all of the scoring in the period, but the Panthers would get 15 total shots on Vladar, forcing him to play his A-game.

In the second, the Flyers looked better, but the Panthers still had an advantage.

Once again, the Florida was on the rush, and Philly’s defense was all out of sorts. Bennett once again had a good look in close, but opted to dish the puck instead. Vladar was all over Bennett, leaving a wide-open net for Verhaeghe to bury the puck.

It was 2-0, but instead of lying down, the Flyers clawed right back into the game.

Flyers make adjustments, earn 10th comeback win of the season

Despite allowing the early goal, it was a much better defensive period for the Flyers in the second. They limited Florida to just five shots in the second, making life much easier for Vladar.

Their transition game was better. When Florida held possession, the Flyers did a good job keeping the high-danger chances to a minimum, getting back to their early-season game.

Not only did they settle in defensively, but the offense found a spark as well.

Emil Andrae (1) got things started for the Flyers. The young blueliner fired a shot into heavy traffic. I am not so sure Sergei Bobrovsky ever had a chance to see it.

Jamie Dyrsdale (7) and Owen Tippett (8) earned assists on the goal.

Just under eight minutes into the second period, the Flyers had life. It would not take long for Philly to find its equalizer.

About three minutes later, it was Andrae (4) again, making things happen. He fired off another shot into traffic. This time, it was deflected in by Matvei Michkov (6).

Just like that, it was a tie game.

From the Michkov goal on, the momentum was in the Flyers’ corner. There was a lengthy period of time with no scoring that took up the rest of the second period, and most of the third as well. However, it was Philadelphia that capitalized on the momentum.

The third period blew by, and neither team had taken the lead. It looked like yet another game bound for overtime for the Flyers. However, with just a hair under 45 seconds left in the game, Tyson Foerster changed things.

Foerster (8), assisted by Sanheim (6) and York (10), made sure this game would not go into the extra frame.

Sean Couturier (3) would tip in the Christian Dvorak (9) shot, giving the Flyers the insurance goal 20 seconds later.

The Flyers would never give Florida a chance to pull the goalie, and would hold on for the 4-2 win.

What’s next for the Flyers

The Flyers are back in action on Black Friday, but in a different venue than usual. Instead of their typical home game (Go birds), they will be on Long Island for a 4:00 p.m. EST showdown with the New York Islanders at UBS Arena.
