The Philadelphia Flyers’ goaltending has been awful this season. But that didn’t matter in the first period of Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Alex Lyon was between the pipes and made an incredible desperation save on the goal line.

The Flyers haven’t had a lot of highlight-reel saves this season and this could be their late entry for Save of the Year.

Lyon made a save on a Kasperi Kapanen puck and lost his stick in the process. He didn’t knock the puck away from the net, however, and it bounced behind him in the crease.

Jason Zucker was in position to poke the puck into the net, but he whiffed as Lyon reached back for an amazing desperation save.

Lyon got there just in time to save the puck from going over the line.

One final look at the save; it was that good.

Lyon stopped all 11 shots he faced in the first period and the Flyers came out with some jump. They led 3-0 in the first period and outshot the Penguins 18-11.
