John Tortorella Takes Away iPads from the Flyers’ Bench

While the Philadelphia Flyers have given John Tortorella plenty to be happy with recently, there is one thing that has bugged him about this team. And that’s the iPads on the bench.

We often see players immediately going to the iPad after a play on the ice. They’re quick to pull it out and dissect what went right and what went wrong. Some like it and others don’t.

Count Tortorella as one of those who doesn’t like it.

No more iPads on the bench

“We took the video on the bench off the bench because we want them to just worry about their next shift,” Tortorella said after the Flyers’ 5-3 win Wednesday over Washington. “I think it’s a major problem with us, understanding the momentums of the game,” You can’t understand momentums of the game if you’re looking at the iPad all the time.

“We took them off and aren’t even going to use them, so that they watch the game and see what’s next.”

It’s about being ready for their next shift and not dwelling on any previous moment that happened on the ice.

Someone who often goes to the iPad for guidance is Travis Konecny. And that was someone who Tortorella mentioned directly as a player who does it too much. But Konecny is also one of those players who is constantly watching the game as well, and he has the mindset that he’s not afraid to make a mistake.

He showed that with his hat trick on Wednesday night.

That is how Tortorella wants the rest of the team to be.

As one of the players who often uses it, Konecny heard his fair share of chirps when they were taken away for this game.

“Everyone was chirping me because I’m always watching them. But I don’t care.” Konecny joked after the game.

Scott Laughton is someone who doesn’t necessarily turn to the iPad for direction. But even he knows that Konecny was looking at it too much.

“He might’ve been upset that the iPads were gone tonight. He’s pretty good at looking at it after every shift,” Laughton said about Konecny. “But, I never really look at it. Didn’t make a difference for me.”

So there you have it. Tortorella hates technology. Okay, maybe just the iPads. But nonetheless, don’t expect to see those on the Philadelphia Flyers’ bench moving forward.
