The Stanley Cup will be in the building tonight in Las Vegas.

Lord Stanley’s 37-pound masterpiece only makes an appearance when a team can win the Stanley Cup finals. Vegas leads Florida, 3-1, and a victory tonight will clinch the Cup. Neither Vegas nor Florida has ever won the Cup.

From the Hockey Hall of Fame, here are some facts about the Cup.

The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy that can be won by professional athletes in North America. It first was awarded in the 1892–93 season.

The Cup gets its name from Lord Stanley of Preston, the governor general of Canada. The Cup stands nearly 3-foot tall.

Total numbers of individuals currently engraved on the Cup: 2,497. That includes 31 names from the Flyers’ 1974 championship team and 33 names from the Flyers’ 1975 championship team.

Bands around the Cup have been retired due to the Cup’s growing size. The total number of individuals engraved on the Cup including the retired bands: 3,489.

The first team to engrave its roster on the Cup: 1906-07 Montreal Wanderers.

Year when engraving the roster became a tradition: 1924.

The Stanley Cup is housed in Toronto at the Hockey Hall of Fame.
