Cutter Gauthier was invited to Philadelphia Flyers Development Camp but declined, general manager Daniel Briere said at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

Gauthier was the Philadelphia Flyers’ top draft pick in 2022, the fifth overall selection. He is considered the team’s top prospect along with newly drafted Matvei Michkov.

“Cutter was invited, declined to come,” Briere said. “We’re assuming that is because he has played a lot of hockey with the World Championship, lots of travel. So, we’re not too worried about that. We don’t have Matvei, either.”

Development Camp begins Sunday and runs for four days.

Briere was asked if there was a disconnect between Gauthier and the Flyers.

“No. We’ll find out a little bit more,” Briere said.

“We’re trying to figure out why he didn’t want to come. But at this point, I’m not too worried about that.”

Gauthier’s Schedule

Gauthier, 19, played a 32-game schedule at Boston College last season. He played seven games at the World Junior U-20 Championships in Canada in December and January.

He also was one of the standouts for Team USA at the World Championships in May in Finland and Latvia. Gauthier played 10 games at the Worlds, scoring seven goals and two assists as the Americans finished fourth.

“Obviously for the fans and even for us it would have been fun to see those two guys on the ice,” Briere said.

“For the moment, it gives us the chance to focus a little bit more on the rest of the group.”

Thirty-nine players are scheduled to participate at the camp at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees. The roster and schedule are linked here.

From what I understand there are a bunch of NCAA rules regarding NHL development camps. I remember reading one article that said he was not eligible to attend but I can’t find it. However I did find this Hockey News article about it.

Tang is better

Relax on the coping of Cutter not wanting to play for Tort’s. He’s a huge team Hayes fan… Mentioned how much the two have been in contact all last season…

This had zero, zip, nada, nothing to do with eligibility. Haha I think to try and figure out if this is an birthday or number of pro games played thing is useless. It clearly none of that stuff or “playing to much hockey” which is 9/10 never the case

I thought I read the same thing so I was very surprised to read that Briere has no idea why he’s not there. I read he attended last year’s so he can’t attend again this year. I was surprised fans were all up in arms about it. The organization should put that out there strongly if it’s true he is not allowed to attend.

Not Offsides

It seems if it had to do with eligibility, he would have told them that. It’s odd. When you’re new to an organization, you usually want to be cooperative to show you are making an effort to fit in and be in line with your employers. I hope he doesn’t think he’s so good that he can do his own thing or that he’s just a lazy sort.

He probably thinks the Flyers know the rules . It was a little mysterious why Danny doesn’t seem to know. I thought I read a while ago he couldn’t attend this development camp by rule because he attended last year’s camp. So if that is true the strange thing is the Flyers don’t know it. Not that Gauthier didn’t tell them.
