Former Flyer Tony DeAngelo Signs With Hurricanes

Former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Tony DeAngelo signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday, according to Puckpedia.

DeAngelo was unconditionally released by the Philadelphia Flyers more than a week ago after a trade with Carolina fell through. In the original workings of the trade, the Flyers reportedly were getting a prospect in return. By releasing him, Philadelphia received nothing in return.

In the original DeAngelo trade a year ago, the Flyers sent Carolina a fourth-round pick in the 2022 draft, a third-round pick in 2023 and a second-round pick in 2024.

DeAngelo’s deal is for $1.67 million. That amount is what he lost when he was released and his final contract year was bought out by the Flyers.

His one-year tenure in Philadelphia ended abruptly. He was benched for the final five games of the season by coach John Tortorella. He complained publicly about the benching after the season.

DeAngelo brought some offense to the Flyers, scoring 11 goals and 31 assists for 42 points. He was a minus-27.

The trade returns DeAngelo to his former team, where he played in the 2021-22 season.

DeAngelo will make his return to Philadelphia on Monday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
