Things are looking pretty grim for the Philadelphia Flyers after Saturday’s gruesome 6-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Flyers are just 2-5-3 in their last 10 games; only Anaheim, Calgary, and San Jose have been worse in their last 10. And, after occupying a playoff spot since early December, the Flyers are not out of the picture.

They’ll need a lot of things to go right after being leapfrogged by Pittsburgh, Detroit, and New York in only a week. The latest Flyers playoff odds agree.

At the time of this writing, FanDuel Sportsbook has the Flyers playoff odds at +450. The implied odds are 18.18%, and that indicates that this race is likely over for the Flyers soon.

Moneypuck sees things a little more optimistically for the Orange and Black as they give the Flyers a 27.1% chance of making the cut. Taking things one step further, their odds will increase greatly with a win against Montreal on Tuesday.

Their odds will jump to 39.91% with a regulation win, and they will have a modestly lower 38.76% chance with an overtime win. A Flyers regulation loss would spell the end of this race, bumping them down to just 10.1%.

With their win against Buffalo on Sunday, Detroit has advanced into the last wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference with 84 points and five games left. Pittsburgh is right behind them with 83 points and five games left.

The Flyers are also right in there, but both Detroit and Pittsburgh have games in hand. A Pittsburgh regulation loss would give them the exact same record as the Flyers, but they hold the regulation wins tiebreaker.

The difference between the two is that one team is playing its best hockey of the year, while the other has been abysmal for five weeks running.

It’s not over for the Flyers yet, but they have to start winning games, and fast.

Disappointing end to an overall positive season. It would have been beneficial to the rebuild if their youth got some playoff experience, I now prefer they would have tanked and had a better chance at the #1 pick.

First of all, the Carter Hart fiasco immediately and severely impacted the goaltending. Factor in the overall emotional impact from the horrible news on the Flyer players themselves, it’s practically amazing that they performed as well as they did (for a time).

All of this converged and was carried into the most inconvenient time of the season. The players are completely spent (physically and emotionally), and it’s no wonder. The players are human beings first, and hockey players second.

Actually the last three weeks were like play-off hockey….they just did not have the experience to weather the storm of it.
It is a lesson learned experience I would think for the young core.

Whether meaning to or not, they look like they are in tank mode again. The Flyers could possibly wind up as low as 9th overall, I think? Maybe 10th? Things would have to play out a certain way. Buff, NJ at 79pts, Sea at 77pts, but Sea has 6 games left. Sea has ARZ and SJ up next, so they could be at 81pts this week. Anyway, maybe the Flyers are just trying to finish as low as possible now?

The silver lining…..drafting 12th at the moment.
If Sabres or Devils can win 2 or 3 more games, could get into the lottery picture.
Or trade their final slot drafting position along with the Panther’s slot to move up into the 4th thru 6th slot…the NHL Draft Chart Point System equates to that at this juncture…assuming Panthers do not reach the Stanley Cup finals (31st and 32nd slots) and are eliminated in previous rounds before then.
