The NHL and NHLPA have officially come to an agreement that will reinstate Carter Hart and the other four players from the Hockey Canada sexual assault trial that concluded in July. Per the agreement, the five players become eligible to sign with a new team starting October 15th. Each player will be suspended until December 1st.

That would mean that Hart, the former Flyers netminder, would become eligible to return between the pipes this December. However, it seems as if it won’t be for the Flyers.

The Athletic’s Chris Johnston reports that Hart is expected to find a new deal by October 1st. Johnston also reported that Hart is seeking a fresh start and is looking to play for a US-based club.

That would effectively take the Flyers and the Edmonton Oilers. Both teams were closely linked to Hart, out of the running for the goaltender’s services.

This makes tons of sense.

The Flyers have seemed to be incredibly loyal to and high on No. 1 goaltender Sam Ersson. They also added Dan Vladar in the offseason, giving them, at the very worst, a legitimate backup.

Johnston also said that he is getting the sense that there are teams that may choose not to pursue the goaltender based on “moral grounds”. Between the Flyers’ current tandem and the fact that Hart was with the team when this all began, I can very easily see the Flyers being one of those teams.

At this point, it feels pretty safe to say that there will not be a reunion between Carter Hart and the Philadelphia Flyers.

Your post says that he wishes to play for a US based team and that leaves Flyers and Edmonton out. Did the Flyers suddenly move and forget to tell everyone?

Not Offsides

And a chance to win which won’t be here anytime soon.

I haven’t been following this too closely, but why wouldn’t the Flyers pursue Hart and try to change his mind?

He was acquitted in court, and I believe I saw that the judge even commented that the accuser “wasn’t credible”.

That makes it seem to me that Hart shouldn’t have anything held against him by either the League or the Flyers.

It’s not like the Ersson/Vlader combo is going to one day be enshrined in the Hall of Fame, and why are the Flyers suddenly worried about loyalty? They certainly didn’t show Hart any when he was apparently wrongly accused.

Not Offsides

Unfortunately, there would be members of the public who wouldn’t accept the verdict and would protest. The corporation that owns the team doesn’t want the negative reaction and distraction, so it has given in.

I can see him signing with Carolina. Cup contender that could use an upgrade with their goalies.

Let me start by saying rape is a disgusting vile thing and those that commit it should be severly punished. That said, another thing I find disgusting and vile is claiming to be raped to get rich from it. If anyone has did any research on this case, the majority of the woman’s testimony was contradicted by the evidence of the case. That is why these young men were acquitted of the charges. What ever happened to innocent until PROVEN GUILTY because these young men are despite being aquitted are still being punished. You think they aren’t being punished? Then why are they still suspended by the NHL and not able to sign with any teams right now? Why are teams thinking about not signing them on “moral” grounds? Why? Because for some reason we have to appease the leftist movement where just being accused is sufficient to punish someone! The mental illness of this leftist thinking like this needs to end. Thos is the same thinking that led to Charlie Kirk being killed in that people you disagree with need to be punished. Someone is accused of something so they need to be punished. Being accused in not the same as being convicted of doing something. Yes, guilty people get away with there crimes every day but it has been said it is better that 10 guilty people go free than one innocent person be punished. Our present day criminal system is not perfect but it’s the best system that we’ve had so far. Yes these young men made some bad choices that put them in this position but they were aquitted of any crimes. I don’t know if the young lady made some bad decisions that she later felt guilty of or whether she was seeking to profit from this incident but the evidence did not support her claims and the men were aquitted. They should be able to pick up their lives at the point this first started and move forward without any further punishment or this being held against them. No, I’m no bleeding heart. I’m actually a retired Corrections Officer that believed that the prisoner got what they had coming and some deserved more but it wasn’t my job to punish them, that was the courts and the justice system’s job. My job was custody and security of the prisons I worked, to make sure the prisoners followed the rules. If a prisoner wanted to do his time, he had no problems from me. If a prisoner thought he didn’t have to follow the rules I enforced them using our prison’s system for enforing the rules using a progressive punishment system. I firmly believe a person is responsible for their actions, nobody else. That they made their choices and need to face the repercussions of those actions. These young men faced the repercussions of poor choices but the evidence showed they didn’t commit a crime and were acquitted. Therefore they are free to resume their lives without any further repercussions!
