Former Flyers coach Peter Laviolette was hired as the New York Rangers’ coach, the team announced Tuesday.

Laviolette has coached 21 years in the league. He is 58. He reportedly has a three-year deal.

Laviolette coached the Flyers from 2009-13. He was 145-98-29.

The Rangers are coming off a 107-point season. They lost in the first round to the Devils in seven games. The previous season the Rangers had 110 points and lost in the conference finals to the eventual champion Lightning.

“Peter’s impressive résumé, which includes winning a Stanley Cup and advancing to the final with three different teams, has made him one of the most respected coaches in the league,” Rangers owner James Dolan said in a statement.

“As we move forward in our goal to consistently contend for the Stanley Cup, I am confident that Peter is the right head coach to lead our team.”

Laviolette has the most wins of any American-born coach with 752. The Norword, Mass., native is the eighth-winningest coach in NHL history.

Laviolette replaced Gerard Gallant, who was under contract through 2025. Laviolette won the Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006. He took the Flyers to the Stanley Cup finals in 2010.

Laviolette was available after he agreed to “mutually part ways” with the Capitals after the season. The Capitals missed the playoffs for the first time in nine years.

The Capitals were 115-78-27 in Laviolette’s three years, losing in the first round of the playoffs in 2021 and 2022.
