Flyers ‘Solve’ Wordle Puzzle On ‘First’ Try!

There are accomplishments in life and there are accomplishments.

The Philadelphia Flyers apparently had a real “shoot” and “score” moment in solving Tuesday’s Wordle in the New York Times.

The team’s Twitter feed proclaimed victory on its “first” “crack” at the addictive word game. And we’re a bit envious, having never come close to that kind of success.

Finally.

Wordle 759 1/1” said the Flyers’ Twitter feed.

If you’re not familiar with Wordle, here is a description from Mashable.com:

“Wordle is a daily free word puzzle game owned and operated by the New York Times. Players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word on a tiled grid, with each guess indicating which letters are correct or incorrect using colored squares.

“Letters on the in-game keyboard are also color-coded similarly to help players keep track of which letters have been guessed.”

The odds of hitting Wordle on the first try is 1 in 2,315 — 0.000432, according to real-statistics.com. There are 2,315 possible five-letter words you can try.

The Flyers had much better odds trying to win the 2023 draft lottery, and the right to draft Connor Bedard. Those odds were 6.5 percent. The Flyers didn’t win the lottery but are “happy” with drafting Matvei Michkov at No. 7.

The average number of tries for solving Wordle around the world is 4.016 guesses, according to photutorial.com.

Possible Words

There were any number of hockey expressions the Flyers could have tried:

  • Check (the leader in the clubhouse)
  • Frost (Morgan)
  • Delay
  • Fight (oops, passe in the modern NHL)
  • Trick (surname of “Hat”)
  • Icing
  • Danny (for Mr. Briere)
  • Build (nickname for “Rebuild”)
  • Power (as in “Play”)
  • Propp (misspelling for “Prop” but honoring Brian Propp)
  • Clock (New England pronunciation of Bobby Clarke’s last name, based on a recent trip to Maine)

But, alas, the Philadelphia Flyers played to their strength, which is the byproduct of good coaching and organization fortitude.

The Wordle for Tuesday, July 18 was: “Flyer”.

They nailed it. Let’s see the Penguins or Rangers match that.
