The Carolina Hurricanes remain in the mix to trade for San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson. Given the uncertainty of that potential deal, it’s logical for former Flyers defenseman Tony DeAngelo to remain on Carolina’s mind.

Maybe as Plan B.

The Karlsson trade is the hangup. If the Hurricanes trade for him, their interest in DeAngelo could wane. But the Pittsburgh Penguins also have interest in Karlsson. The Sharks want Pittsburgh defenseman Marcus Pettersson in return, according to The Athletic.

The Flyers unconditionally released DeAngelo a week ago. He cleared waivers, becoming a free agent and setting up the Flyers to buy him out. Before the Flyers released DeAngelo, they had a deal in place to trade him back to Carolina after a year in Philadelphia.

So, at one point, there was interest from the Hurricanes.

The Raleigh News & Observer reported earlier in the week that Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell hasn’t spoken to DeAngelo’s agent. A N&O columnist suggested it was good news that the Hurricanes were staying away.

The Predators also are in the market for a defenseman and are rumored to be interested in Carolina’s Brett Pesce. Pesce’s availability, and that of defenseman Brady Skjei, could come into play if the Hurricanes land Karlsson. Once the dominoes start falling, that’s when DeAngelo could find a home that isn’t Philadelphia.

Nashville Hockey Now has more on the Predators’ situation and how DeAngelo plays into it.
