Philadelphia Flyers fans just can’t get away from Tony DeAngelo.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Wednesday they have acquired the rights to forward Massimo Rizzo and the Carolina Hurricanes’ fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft in exchange for the rights to forward David Kase.

Rizzo was the player the Flyers reportedly were going to receive when they tried to trade DeAngelo to the Hurricanes in July. The proposed trade turned into a saga. First, the trade fell through because of a clause in the collective bargaining agreement. Then, DeAngelo cleared waivers.

Then, the Flyers unconditionally released DeAngelo, which led to the Flyers buying out his contract. Next, DeAngelo signed a one-year deal with the Hurricanes, his former team. By unconditionally releasing DeAngelo, the Flyers received nothing in return.

Rizzo, 22, scored 17 goals and 29 assists (46 points) in 38 games for the University of Denver, one of the top programs in college hockey. He led the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in points and was 11th nationally in points.

He is 5-foot-11, 175 pounds and a native of Burnaby, British Columbia. Rizzo was a freshman on Denver’s NCAA national championship team in 2022. He was the Hurricanes’ seventh-round pick in 2019, the 216th pick overall.

Kase, of Czechia, played seven games with the Flyers over two seasons and scored one goal. He also played three seasons with the Phantoms. He was a 2015 fifth-round draft pick, 128th overall.
