Former Philadelphia Flyers’ first-round draft pick Jay O’Brien became an unrestricted free agent at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Since the Flyers chose not to sign O’Brien after he completed his fourth NCAA season, Philadelphia will receive a second-round pick in the 2024 draft.

O’Brien, a forward, was picked 19th overall in the 2018 draft, five picks after the Flyers selected Joel Farabee. When O’Brien was drafted, he was the 32nd-ranked North American skater by NHL Central Scouting.

O’Brien played three seasons at Boston University, after playing his freshman season at Providence. The Terriers advanced to the Frozen Four this past season. O’Brien played 39 games and scored eight goals and 24 assists (32 points) in 39 games.

In 104 college games, O’Brien scored 28 goals and 47 assists (65 points).

The Flyers will have nine or 10 picks in the 2024 draft:

  • Two first-round picks (their own and the Panthers’ for the Claude Giroux trade)
  • Two second-round picks (Columbus must decide after the 2024 first round is complete if it will send a 2024 second-round pick or the 2025 second-round pick to Flyers, and the pick from the O’Brien compensation)
  • Third-round pick
  • Fourth-round pick
  • Fifth-round pick
  • Two sixth-round picks (their own and the Blues’ for the Kevin Hayes trade)
  • Seventh-round pick
