Philadelphia Flyers, Travis Konecny news

The Philadelphia Flyers locked up star right winger Travis Konecny on Thursday, signing him to an eight-year, $70-million extension that carries an annual cap hit of $8.75 million.

GM Danny Briere called the fiery Konecny “an integral part of the fabric of our team, and we are thrilled to have him under contract for the long term.”

Konecny, 27, has one year remaining on a six-year deal he signed in 2019, one that has an annual cap hit of $5.5 million. His new deal has a no-movement clause for the first six years, and a limited-trade clause in the final two years.

The two-time All-Star collected 68 points, including a career-high 33 goals, in 76 games last season. He led the NHL with six shorthanded goals.

“I couldn’t be happier to sign again with the Flyers,” said Konecny “There’s such a bright and exciting future with this team and I can’t wait to be a part of it for the next nine years and see what we will accomplish.”

In a Zoom call with the media after the signing, Konecny said he “just wanted to get this (deal) over. There was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be a Flyer for life. In what we’ve been working toward — and what I believe this team can be — this is where I wanted to be. It was pretty easy for me to make the decision that I was going to stay here as long as possible.”

Konecny said he and his family “enjoy where we’re at” and “how we are treated” in Philadelphia, and that made him not want to test free agency next year. He said his goal is to one day win the Stanley Cup, “and it wouldn’t feel like an accomplishment unless it was with the Flyers and the team that believed in me. And I just wanted to show the same respect. I believe in the Flyers as well. I’m in for the long haul and really excited for the next chapter here and see what we can do.”

Here are some quick pros and cons of the deal:

Pros

  • The Philadelphia Flyers are getting a team leader who never stops working. His relentless style rubs off on others.
  • Consistency is one of Konecny’s trademarks. He scored 24 goals per season for three straight years early in his career, and had 31 and 33 goals over each of his last two seasons.
  • His agitating style helps give the Flyers an identity that will last well into the 2030s.In addition, he is a great leader and someone that youngsters like Matvei Michkov can emulate.
  • Konecny’s commitment to the Flyers is admirable, even though they haven’t made the playoffs in four years. Some players in his position would have played out their contract and signed with a strong contender when becoming a free agent next summer.

Cons

  • Konecny has been somewhat injury-prone during his career. He has played 50 and 60 games in two of the last four seasons. He hasn’t played 80 games since 2018-19. That makes the long deal more iffy.
  • Because of his tenacious style, will Konecny slow down significantly in his early to mid 30s?
  • In the final year of his contract, he will be 36. That makes the eight-year term seem a bit too long.
  • The Flyers are several years from being a Cup contender, making it fair to wonder if they would have been better served getting lots of draft picks and prospects for Konecny in a trade.

Bye bye Briere you paid more than Teinhart a fifty goal scorer, this contract another sore eye , 3 liner in 3 years

BIGE88

They are going for it in 3,4 and 5 years . After that Briere and Tortorella will be gone more than likely win or lose cup in that window .

I don’t love it . Those last 3 years will be a disaster for this contract but we are all in with a lot of the roster and have to create that window for 3,4 and 5 years . We will lose too many parts in over 5 years and need a reset anyway

Dave

This is now beyond an embarrassment dude all things considered.

Bill M

No where near cup
Contender 3-5 yrs they are the Columbus Sabres next decade and Konecny signing proves it

Dave

The faster they get this incompetence our of management the faster they’ll do a legit Rebuild. Because thid is an epic failure at this point. Same clownery. Just a gaslighting rebrand Because us fans are too stupid to know what we want to watch apparently.

Dave

That’s just ONE horrible comparison. There’s honestly countless.

BIGE88

I don’t love it . But we are NOW ALL in now for 3, 4 and 5 years from now . After that we will go into abyss for awhile

2027,2028 and 2029 will be our window for cup

konecny , coots, risto , Seeler , Laughton and sanheim all connected for our cup now . All I believe can perform in their roles for a cup

I like Konecny I just view him as a 3rd liner for a cup team . He gets boxed out too much in playoffs and can’t get thru the trees . But you can’t argue with that penalty kill with Laughton . That’s dangerous weapon

I just view michkov , foerster , Tippett and a still unknown power wing as our top 6 wings for our cup in 3 or 4 years

I wonder if this leaves farabee trade bait for our power wing or center eventually . Although I guess TK could still be dealt technically speaking . But not sure that will happen now . Someone has to eat those last 3 years 😂

Romus

Do not see Risto and maybe even Laughton being here in three years from now.

Bill M

Shouldn’t be here this year

Dave

Laughton will be here overpaid until he’s 40.

Bill M

Wow you are ridiculous

Romus

The way it is anymore…..$8.8M cap hit seems to be a million too high, but surely beats the Mitch Marner and et al, double digit million dollar cap hits. Sam Reinhart’s eight-year, $69M is a little less…but he is a little older than TKo.

Bill M

He’s also a playoff performer , way better than Konecny who isn’t going to lead this team when it comes to playoff wins

Bill M

That’s a joke , it really is , getting old. This organization chases players out then they get a hard on for somebody and over pay where his contract will be untradeable

Bill M

When they next make playoffs , last year of his contract he’ll go goalless again

Robert

Another bad contract by team management, it seems to be a constant trend across professional sports. A responsible GM never offers a contract with No Trade, and/or No Movement Clauses, or for terms longer that 5 years. To do so is reckless and wasteful.

Clarke

Not crazy about the length of the deal. I’m sure the Flyers would have preferred 6 yrs, but that’s the nature of negotiations. It was important to re-sign TK, as it seems to me he is the de facto captain on this team & the intangibles he brings are very important for its success. I suppose, as always, we shall see.

Bill M

6 yrs ?? Three yrs is as far I’d go with 3rd liner

Dave

Atrociously horrible contracts. Another embarrassing GM leading The Flyers to more draft purgatory and more embarrassing mediocrity.

Dave

68 point BEST SEASON amd ONE goal I’m 22 playoff games. This is going to be one of the most embarrassing bad contracts in the league in 1-3 years FLAT.
GO GET A CENTER WHO CAN SCORE MORE THAN 30 POINTS. RIDICULOUS!!!

Bill M

When will flyers realize instead of overpaying 3 liners they should go for a GM with proven record and no ties to players/orginization. This is beyond incompetent , Danny’s wearing out his welcome with that smug face really quick
