Bailey’s Daily: Flyers Prospects; Maple Leafs Crown Matthews Captain
In Saturday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
After neglecting to meet the Aug. 15 deadline, the Philadelphia Flyers and forward prospect Bryce Brodzinski, a 2019 seventh-round pick, are parting ways. Brodzinski’s NHL rights with the Flyers expired on Friday after no entry-level deal was signed, so now the organization is down one more forward.
Brodzinski, obviously, is not and was not any kind of NCAA superstar or NHL sleeper in the making, but he’s a player I felt could have some value to the Flyers organization. They clearly felt differently about that.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL were loaded to the brim with a number of low-upside grinders, such as Jacob Gaucher, Garrett Wilson, Adam Brooks, Cooper Marody, and the like. Nothing against those players, of course, but we know what they are. Brodzinski is at least just starting out in the pros and can decided that fate for himself.
Also, expect more Flyers content starting to come and flow as we approach September here. It’s been a long, slow summer with very little Flyers news aside from Matvei Michkov updates and the Alexei Kolosov saga.
Today, Saturday, is also the last day for the PhHN+ flash sale, with which you can subscribe and support me for $10 for the year, but you have only until noon to secure the deal. For your troubles, you’ll get access to all subscriber-only content, an ad-free experience, and access to subscriber-only content to our sister sites, which are now over a dozen strong and are usually included in these dailies. I’ll include the link to the sale here.
Another heads up–we’re aiming to have three exclusive interviews out at or just after the end of the month, once some of the players and coaching staff begin returning from vacations of their own. Don’t be the one who misses out on the massive sale.
NHL News
So, the Toronto Maple Leafs did indeed finally make some semblance of structural changes on Wednesday, relieving John Tavares from his post and instead naming Auston Matthews the 26th captain in Maple Leafs history.
Matthews was officially unveiled as the new captain on Friday; take a look at No. 34 in his (very slightly) new threads here.
Oh, and if you didn’t like the Colorado Avalanche for the Ryan Johansen and Sean Walker ordeal, wait until you see this. The Avs hired Andrew Wilson on Friday, further expanding their front office with a guy who worked for the NHL itself for nearly two decades and literally ran the NHL Central Registry. Nice.
That Ryan Johansen deal smacks of unethical dealings. A little surprised Jones and Briere have not filed an adjudication appeal with the league on it. Johansen’s agent alone raises suspicions on his motives, since he also is the agent for Cutter Gauthier. As to the player himself, how does a guy play a game…..everything seems fine health wise- post game—no medical assistance needed… then gets traded next day and claims a season ending injury.
I don’t follow the salaries . I know that’s part of the overall game for front office to deal with. I like to make sure the front office is doing its job and creating a window for a championship with ALL the parts here at once
im putting Johansson with same bucket as Ryan ellis as a “writeoff “ knowing they wouldn’t be going for the cup in these years.
I EXPECT that we get the same favorable treatments when our window opens in 2 years.
Vegas is a very CLeAR example of front office shanigans league wide last few years.
last year at deadline , non playoff teams were picking up “parts” of contracts .
I wouldn’t stress over Johansson. Never liked the guy and I think it’s just a writeoff until next year when more players show up for our run starting in 2 years
mathews had some off ice immature stuff when he was younger or he probably woulda been captain back then.
mathews is a protype #1 center franchise Center that can do it all for this league , including in front of net . Tavares is just a sniper center
for those who watch all the teams . If you ever watch Mathews Play regularly , he’s an Eric lindros clone without the rough stuff and large shoulder pads . His skating , shooting and mannerisms are identical to lindros . Add an inch, bigger shoulder pads, the #88 , the rough stuff and u would have Eric lindros part 2. Closest thing I’ve seen to lindros .
