Philadelphia Flyers news

Sitting dead-last in the Metropolitan Division, the Philadelphia Flyers (4-7-1) are kicking off a tough three-game road trip with an away matchup with Rod Brind’Amour’s Carolina Hurricanes (8-2-0) at Lenovo Center at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night, and they’ll have to do so without starting goalie Sam Ersson.

Ersson, 25, was injured in Saturday’s 2-0 loss to the Boston Bruins and was rumored to be out for about a week, though he has accompanied the Flyers for this road trip and practiced on his own in full gear on Tuesday morning.

In the meantime, Flyers head coach John Tortorella is turning to rookie goalie Aleksei Kolosov, as the 22-year-old Belarusian will make his second NHL start against the Hurricanes on Tuesday night.

Kolosov is 0-2-0 this season with a 3.29 GAA and .870 save percentage, though he showed marked improvement in Saturday’s game from his first NHL start against Montreal on Oct. 27.

Defenseman Egor Zamula returns to the lineup in place of veteran Erik Johnson after a four-game absence, though it is unclear what his role will be and who he will play alongside in his return.

It is worth noting that fellow Russian Matvei Michkov has not recorded a single point since Zamula exited the lineup and has more giveaways (8) than shots on goal (7) in that timeframe.

Zamula has two assists and a minus-10 rating in his eight games this season.

Additionally, Ryan Poehling is out due to a family matter, per Tortorella. He is not with the team on the road trip.

Tuesday night’s Flyers game is scheduled to begin just after 7 p.m.

Hurricanes Game Lineup

Pyotr Kochetkov (S), Spencer Martin

The Flyers will be facing some old friends on Tuesday night in the forms of Sean Walker, traded to Colorado at the NHL trade deadline in March, and Shayne Gostisbehere, jettisoned to Arizona for free in 2021.

The two former Flyers have combined to become one of the very best defensive pairings in the entire NHL this season, so there will undoubtedly be some tough love there.

Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen is out for a few weeks with a lower-body injury, so Pyotr Kochetkov will take the reins as Carolina’s starting goalie until further notice, with Spencer Martin re-called to back him up.

Kochetkov is 5-1-0 this season with a 2.51 GAA, a .893 save percentage, and one assist.
