NHL Preseason Includes Games in Australia, Nova Scotia; Plus, Flyers’ Schedules
The NHL preseason schedule will begin Sept. 23 with the first of two games in Melbourne, Australia.
The Coyotes and Kings will play at Rod Laver Arena and will have a rematch the following night. These games will be the first NHL contests to be played in the Southern Hemisphere.
Preseason games will be played at 44 NHL and neutral-site venues across North America and Melbourne, which more than Sydney is the sporting capital of Australia.
In addition to Melbourne, here are some neutral sites:
- Abbotsford, British Columbia
- Cedar Park, Texas
- Halifax, Nova Scotia
- Independence, Missouri
- Orlando
- Palm Desert, Calif.
- St. Thomas, Ontario
- Salt Lake City, Utah
- Sydney, Nova Scotia
- San Diego
- Tucson, Ariz.
- West Lorne, Ontario
- Wichita, Kan.
Salt Lake City hosts the Kings and Sharks on Oct. 5. Salt Lake City would love to land either an existing franchise or an expansion team.
One of Salt Lake’s options might have disappeared with the news Wednesday of the Arizona Coyotes announcing they plan to buy land in Mesa, Ariz., for a new arena. The Coyotes played this past season at Mullett Arena on Arizona State University’s campus. Mullett Arena is only a 5,000-seat facility, not a long-term solution for the Coyotes.
