When we see video of Philadelphia Flyers prospect Matvei Michkov zipping around on Russian rinks, he’s wearing uniform number 39.

Thirty-nine? Hmmmm. We know there have been previous No. 39s on the Flyers, but none stand out. (Maybe that’s on the author’s memory, not the players.)

We looked it up.

Nine Flyers have worn No. 39. The first was goalie Robbie Moore in 1979. He was 3-0-1 in five games with a 1.77 goals-against average for the Flyers. Moore had two shutouts in his five games. His NHL career consisted of only one more game, with the Capitals in 1982-83.

Mr. Moore died in January 2022.

Other 39s:

  • Ross Fitzpatrick (1986): The center played 20 games over four seasons and scored five goals and two assists.
  • David Fenyves (1988-91): The defenseman played four of his nine seasons in Philadelphia. He scored one goal and five assists.
  • Mike Murray (1988): The center had a one-game NHL career.
  • Jeff Lank (2000): The defenseman had a two-game NHL career.
  • Marty Murray (2002-03): The center played eight NHL seasons, two with the Flyers. He scored 23 goals and 30 assists with Philadelphia.
  • Mark Alt (2014-15, 2017-18): The defenseman played nine of his 20 NHL games with the Flyers.
  • Tyrell Goulbourne (2019): The left wing played all 11 of his NHL games with the Flyers. The third-round pick in 2013 has been in the AHL and ECHL (one game) since 2019.
  • Nate Prosser (2020-21): The defenseman has played 11 NHL seasons. He played six games with the Flyers.

It’s probably safe to say that Michkov, if he plays for the Flyers, will have the greatest career among the Philadelphia No. 39s.
