In Thursday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.

Flyers News

That Matvei Michkov sure is something, isn’t he?

The Philadelphia Flyers’ teenage sensation scored his first and second career NHL goals on Tuesday night against the Edmonton Oilers, giving the Flyers 1- and 2-0 leads, respectively.

Michkov’s two goals were scored in very different ways, as he does and always has. On the first, Michkov jammed away at a loose puck at the side of the net. On the second, Michkov ripped a one-timer between the body and left arm of Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner from an impossible angle, and it won’t be the last time we see such a goal this season.

Aside from Michkov, though, Tuesday night’s Flyers grades were not looking all that great. By the end of the night, the Orange and Black squandered their 2-0 and 3-2 leads to Connor McDavid and Co., as the usually reliable Travis Sanheim had an uncharacteristically unsightly performance defensively. But he wasn’t alone in that regard.

And, in case you missed it, former Flyers defensemen Shayne Gostisbehere and Sean Walker are cooking on a defensive pair together with the Metropolitan Division rival Carolina Hurricanes.

By the analytics, when paired together, the two defensemen are dominating the run of play like no other defense pairing in the NHL at the moment, which is a testament to their skills as well as the analytically inclined Hurricanes GM, lifelong Flyers fan and former Flyers blogger Eric Tulsky.

NHL News

Fans of every other team in the Metropolitan Division will rejoice on the day Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin finally hangs up the skates.

Although goalless through two games amid his chase to catch and break Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record of goals in the NHL, Ovechkin reached a new milestone on Tuesday night.

Factoring in on two goals in a 4-2 win over Vegas, Ovechkin’s two assists give him 700 for his NHL career. That isn’t comparable to his 853 goals, but people sometimes forget that The Great 8 can dish the biscuit, too.

Flyers have both the Avs and Oilers first round draft choices for 2025……the caveat however, is that in the unlikely instance that one or both team’s continue tp spiral out of control, well, both picks are protected. Colorado’s is top 10 protected and Edmonton’s is top 12 protected, unless they trade their 2026 first, then 2025 is unprotected. One reason Edmonton would be moving their 2026 first is to add to their current team at the trade deadline, more than likely they are fighting for a play-off spot anyways so the protective clause is not important anyways .But there is no reason not to hope that both teams do not find their usual magic this season and finish outside the play-offs and outside the 10th or 12th pick. And 2025’s draft is suppose to be a deep one.
